上に紹介した「語彙（ごい）を増やす小説３冊」の他、この本も読みました（読んだのは、１２歳のとき）。語彙を増やすために書かれた、１０のストーリーです。


１０人の先輩たちが、それぞれ短くておもしろいストーリー（体験談など）を書いてくれた本（読むと、アメリカのハイスクール生活が身近に感じられると思います）。覚えるべき単語は、太字になっています。

太字単語が出てくるのと同じページの下の方に、意味が書いてあります。だから、楽に読み進めます。

それと、本の最後に、Glossary　がついていて、覚えているかどうか、イッキに確認することもできます。

表紙には、
Increase your SAT verbal score while laughing your gluteus* off

*gluteus  n. pl. - any of the large muscles of the buttocks; especially gluteus maximus

というように例が書かれています。

単語レベルを紹介すると：

真ん中あたりのページ（124ページ）の文章は、こういう風です。
　　To my relief, Seymour did come back. In fact, by the time his parents brought our maverick patient back to the ward, the rest of his wardmates were thankfully engrossed in something else. And this time, it was even more exciting than crossword puzzles. Their newfound devilry: prank-calling local businesses.

同じページの下の方に、上の文章の太字単語の説明が、書いてあります。
Maverick: n. a nonconformist; an independent person who does not go along with the group.
Engross: v. to fully occupy.
Devilry: n. malicious mischief; wickedness.

一番最初のページはというと、こんな風にはじまります。ハイスクール用だからってこともあると思うんだけど、かなり、気をひく書き方です。 
　　Why did kissing Chris seem like a good idea? To understand that, you need to know about my biggest high school insecurity: I was not particularly feminine. My whole life, I've been a tomboy to the core, spurning dresses and cute shoes, and embracing pants and sneakers instead. Flower prints still make me gag.
　　Before adolescence, I was content being a tomboy. But when I hit the teenage years, I saw that my friends were turning into attractive women, and I was becoming, um... well, I wasn't sure what I was becoming. My insecurities grew, culminating in a roar of peer pressure that made me determined to prove my femininity.

下の方の太字単語の説明はこんな風です。簡単な単語も入っています。
Insecurity: n. self-doubt; something unstable.
Feminine: adj. relating to, or like, woman.
Spurn: v. to reject with disdain.
Content: adj. satisfied; easy in mind.
Culminate: v. to reach the highest point.

最後のページは、こんな風です。
As far as I'm concerned, our senior prank goes down in history. Some might allege that the Styrofoam - peanut gang had us beat, but their story ended with the culprits sweeping up their crime. Our tale has a more triumphant resolution. Rather than discipline us with poop-scooping the pigsty, our English teacher intervened and took the hogs back to his farm. Victory was ours. You could smell it in the air, all day long.

そして、単語説明はこうなっています。
Allege: v. to assert without proof or before proving.
Culprit: n. an offender; the guilty one.
Discipline: v. to train; chastise.
Intervene: v. to intercede; interfere.

それぞれのストーリー自体おもしろいし、アメリカのハイスクール生活もうかがえるので、太字単語がほとんど全部わかる場合でも、読めば楽しめると思います。また、逆に、太字単語の意味が全くわからなくても、下の説明を見れば、辞書なしで読み進められると思います。僕が読んだときのことを思い出してみると、「だいたいはわかるけど、ところどころわからない単語があるなあ」っていうときに読みました。
